The main things to look for when determining whether it's a cold sore rather than zit, is that a the hpv sore Weeps continuously, is thicker (deep) than it is wide(surface), the scab is of a yellowish color, alongside more sever pain when compared to a large pimple, not to mention the healing time is longer. The virus is most contagious when popped, likely causing one nearby; but even when the sore has healed and scab is removed the pink skin is still rather/very open to reinfection. Merely washing your face with a bar of soap, or the spreading of soap can spread the virus, this is how contagious it is, and why Proactiv which requires three steps of rubbing works miracles for some and is a nightmare for others(those with HPV.) I had both and it was like fighting an impossible confusing fight. If you have both then fight the cold sore, sine one can turn into a wall of sores/"Zits." Shaving for men is an even further increased risk as soap is spread/ along with possible virus along freshly shaved skin; hence the creation of aftershave which is an antiseptic containing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is the heavy duty stuff, that I use though must be taken with caution as it is harsh and flammable.
