Acne Definition
Acne is a common inflamatory condition of the skin usually observed during adolecense. It is caused by excess production of oil from sebaceous glands in which the hair follicles become plugged and is characterized by black heads, pimple outbreaks, cysts, infected abscesses, and sometimes scarring. These acne lesions usually appear on the face, chest, back, shoulders and neck.
Type of Acne lesions:
* Comedo - Sebaceous follicle plugged with sebum, dead cells from inside the sebaceous follicle, tiny hairs, and sometimes bacteria. When open it is called blackhead because the surface of the plug in the follicle has a blackish appearance. When it is closed is known as whitehead. Its appearance is that of a skin-colored or sligtly inflamed "bump" in the skin.
* Papule - A group of almost invisible papules and microcomedones caused by a cellular reaction to the process of acne. It feels like a "sandpaper" to the touch.
* Pustule - A dome-shaped lesion containing pus consisting of a mixture of white blood cells, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Usually has a hair in the center when forms over a sebaceous follicle.
* Macule - Red spot left by a healed acne lesion. It is a temporary flat red or red-pink spot that may persist for days or maybe weeks before disappearing.
* Nodule - Solid dome-shaped lesion characterized by inflammation, extends into deeper layers of the skin and may cause tissue destruction that results in scarring. It may be very painful and may not respond to therapies other than isotretinoin.
* Cyst - A sac-like lesion that contains liquid or semi-liquid material consisting of white blood cells, dead cells, and bacteria. Very similar to Nodule in terms of inflammation. It extends into deeper layers of the skin and may result in scarring. Like with nodule, therapy with isotretinoin is sometimes the only effective treatment.Neew more info?
