If the dermatologist know what he/she is doing and care enough for its patients it will work. So, give him a chance...

I kept having to go back and go back. I probably saw a dermotologist for 5 years. Each one has his own style. My first one gave me lots of antibiotics and odd soaps (he had me using a dandruff soap on my face). The next one gave me a cream, and then had kids and effectively shut down her practice before I could go back. My third and final one tried everything on me. He was an older man who really listened to what I was saying.

My problem with dermatologists was that the drugs never seemed to work. Some would work for weeks or months, but none ever continued to work good enough. I had one cream (tazorac) which I used with some other products. This actually worked. Unfortunately, it dried my skin out terribly. Every morning, under my eyes and around my nose and mouth was full of flaking, inflamed skin. I finally gave up on clear skin. I had found a cure after years of searching, but it hurt so bad I couldn't talk. That wasn't worth it.

Part of this might have been my fault. I thought my skin was oily. It was only oily because I kept putting these harsh chemicals on my face that stripped out the oil. Once I stopped all that, my face finally was able to balance itself.

My successes were mild, which is why I stopped going. I know others who have had better results though. I'd keep it up going to the dermatologist for at least a year. It does take some trial and error to find a balance that works for you.

If that does not work for you, check out my post under natural remedies on the oil cleansing method. It's what finally cured mine. If he hasn't prescribed a face wash, you could try it now. Otherwise, I'd stick with what you've got.

i also had a dermatologist a few years back. shed give me topical creams and soaps. it was ok though, i think that it boils down to 'who' exactly does the treatment.... i mean it helps if you choose a reputable clinic. so a little research needs to be done.... there are also a lot of resources out there that could help you with acne control.... but try the one i came across, not too long ago, its very informative and it also sells products for treating acne....
