What do you know about Accutane?
Anybody used this medicine? Has any side effects? -
I don't know much because I never used it , but from what I heard has a lot of sides effects such as suicide attempt which is really scary.
-
I read about Accutane that is the only medicine that cures acne, but I also read that is very dangerous for your health.
-
The anti-acne drug Accutane that itÂ’s supposedly the only medicine that treats acne, causes serious damage to your health, and next to all the scary side effects already mentioned on the package it has another one that they forgot to worn us about and for which The Swiss Pharmaceutical Company Roche had to pay over $2.6 million to a 36 old mail-patient is Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
-
taisia_c, do you refer to that case in the news latelly when the 36 year old Alabama-native Andrew ... is suffering because of the anti-acne medicine of permanent diarrhea and needed many surgeries. He won $119,000 for medical expenses and the $2.5 million to cover future medical costs.
I know from a friend experience that the pain caused by this disease is unbearable for some people, the cramps and the weakness, not to mention that your body looses all it’s minerals and becomes severely dehydrated and if is not treated it may cause death.
ugly stuff -
Yes, Jamy. I was talking about that case. And believe me I know the pain because I went through it many times and now I carry Imodium every where I go, to make sure I am not dieing out of pain.

hey just to let you know, one of the side effects (that is listed in the pamphlet it comes with) is " may cause suicidal thoughts". dead serious. been on the stuff five times and became paranoid about suicidal thoughts! accutane works but only for a while, between six months to two years and then it comes back (if yours is the type to stick around, unlike puberty acne). wouldn't recommend it. but then again who knows how bad my scars would be if i never went on it.

Never personally used it. However i do have a friend who did. He experienced some symptoms of aggressive behavior, vomiting, etc., but he was never suicidal or anything. It cleared up his skin pretty good.

Antibiotics are the devil, I've only taken minocycline and tetracycline and they helped my acne only short term. I don't know why I thought I prayed that they might be the solution even though my dermatologist said, "Only good for short-term results..." But I guess at that stage, I was so desperate I constantly hoped that every treatment would finally be the last.
Anyway, at one point I even suggested to my dermatologist that I switch to Accutane. He said that probably wouldn't be a good idea due to the side effects: depression (not so bad), vomiting (worse), loss of eye sight, extra bone growth, etc.. I decided.. maybe not worth it.
But before I get into that, let me explain why anti-biotics only work short term. Alright, if any of you have taken Biology before, you know that we all have good bacteria living in our stomachs that help break down food, supply us with vitamin b-12, fight off parasites and bad bacteria, etc.. if you don't believe me, that's why we yogurt is so popular. They have several names like "live cultures," "probiotics," "good bacteria," etc... and if you're asian that's why we drink the product called yogloo, if you've ever heard of it.
So basically if you didn't have this good bacteria living in your stomach, your nutrition absorption would drop to less than 10% and you would probably be infected with all sorts of worms, parasites, bad bacteria, acne bacteria, yada yada. Antibiotics does just that. It kills all the good and bad bacteria. That's why when you first start antibiotics, it may seem like your acne is getting better. That's because you killed the acne bacteria and bad bacteria in your stomach. But you also killed the good bacteria..
After a while, your acne will start coming back because your stomach has nothing in it to protect it anymore. If you know something about diseases and viruses, they "adapt." You keep taking these antibiotics and eventually they'll come back a stronger and more aggressive strain. I used to have only acne on my cheeks. I took the antibiotics and things were pretty good for about 2 months. Then it came back and I started getting it around my jaw and forehead. I had never had it there before, that was when I finally listened to my mom's advice (she's a health freak and reads lots of books too) and stopped. My point is, your dermatologist is not going to tell you this. You're going to have to learn it yourself if you keep taking antibiotics. And if that good bacteria is not replanted in your stomach, because it doesn't grow normally, then you're going to have some serious problems and no matter how you eat, how much you go to saunas or whatever is not going to help. You need to kill off the bad bacteria again (w/out taking antibiotics because of the horrible side effects too) and reimplant the probiotics.
I had acne for close to 10 years and was pretty much obsessed with clearing it. I tried all that ProActiv, dermatologist stuff, didn't work. If you think what I'm talking about makes sense. I'm currently building an information website about how I cleared my acne naturally without using any of those antibiotics, laser treatments, topicals, etc...

I took accutane about 8-10 years ago, when I was in high school. I don't remember acting aggressively, or anything along those lines. BUT I will say that I dont endorse Accutane.
Yes. It did clear up my acne. But, I remember I had to go in once a month for them to take blood and test to see if my liver was functioning correctly.
Also, the only side effect that I remember I had, was extremely dry skin. I mean really dry skin. I would go thru a big bottle of lotion about once every 2-3 weeks. Still to this day, I have to carry around chapstick everywhere, because it literally dried my skin out so bad that I will get cracked lips if I don't constantly put it on.

Hi guys,
I have a slightly different perspective on accutane. I'm currently a 24 year old male who has suffered from acne off on for the last 10 years. Long courses of antibiotics have had little/ short term effect on my acne. My first cause of accutane must have been about 8 years ago when my sports were at their worst i was getting deep inflamed painful spots on my back and chest and my face had a good layer- i'd say my acne would have been moderate- severe on my back and moderate on my face. The first course i took really did dry my skin I would have to put a moisturising cream and chap stick on several times a day and would even get nose bleeds occassionally which i have never suffered from before or since (as a piece of advice aqueous cream from boots worked by far best for me- its cheap, effective and didn't sting). However after a prolonged course my spots reduced dramatically the deep painful ones that i used to suffer from on my body disappeared almost completely and my face was much improved. The dry skin remained with me although at a reducing layer for a year or 2. I found no associated depression in fact on the contrary as most people my acne would really get me down and when it started to improve my mood greatly improved.
In the bast 9 years since this first course i've had a further 4 or 5 courses- basically i seem to follow a pattern of great but dry skin for a few months, great skin and not too dry, Normal skin, few superficial spots on face with little inflammation followed a couple of months later ny more juicy spots. However since the first cause i have never relapsed into getting the same quantity of deep painful scarring spots on my back. In all honesty,my acne in the last 8 years since my first 2 courses of accutane has probably never been more than most people would regard as mild (or on a bad stretch mild to moderate) but I've always been very self conscious of it and nothing else seems to work. So most times when my spots start getting bad i actually have to persuade my dermatologist to put me on another cause. As i am now a medical professional i know there are risks, but there are also side effects of being on long term antibiotics. I can take the dry skin and my liver perameters have always been excellent, my spots are getting a bit worse so i'm just getting ready to plead my case to tmy dermatologist on monday to put me on another course of accutane.
Anyhow i hope this helps some people- good luck -
just rwad my post and their are a lot of typos which i appologise for! Probably should have read it through first but hope it is still helpful.
