Proactiv, I had a bad experience with it.
I have a moderate skin problem, which seems to come and go in periods, ranging from only 2-3 breakouts to about 20 (10 of which are really bad). I'd say that spring is when my skin is at its worst.
I've tried Benzoyl Peroxide (BP) and noticed how it worked pretty well. When I saw that Proactiv had products with BP, I decided to go for it.

Please note that the fact that famous celebrities are endorsing it made me rather reluctant to buying it, after all, if it REALLY worked wonders, why would you have P.Diddy tell you all about how awesome it is? I am kind of an over-analyzer and therefore figured that something marketed that strongly couldn't be the "magic cure". I tried it nevertheless, because my skin was in a terrible condition.

After the first few months of the treatment, I finally (and I say finally because it took me about 3 months to get any results) started to see some improvement. I kept on using it, but even though I thought it was getting better, I would regularly find a new painful bump, and anyone that knows acne as well as I do knows that a small painful bump can grow up to be a monster breakout. And some of mine did, even during the treatment.

After about 2 years of trying desperately to make some use of Proactiv, I finally gave it up. On the whole, just before I started Proactiv my skin was a bit worse than when I stopped, but there was no real "cure" and to be honest, I didn't even feel a difference, it seemed to me like the usual cycles, if I may call it thus, of my acne.

Then the fun part came... I stopped using Proactiv and my skin didn't like that. For about 2 months after stopping, my breakouts were more frequent, and more violent than usual. I thought it might have been my "bad period" but it didn't fit any model I had built up in my mind of the cycles. Basically, my skin was simply crying out for Proactiv. That's what I still think today.

Do I feel I've been lied to? Yes!
Do I feel I've had my money stolen? Yes!
Do I dislike P.Diddy even more, now? Yes!

Now don't get me wrong, I guess it would work great for many people, but those people probably have a different problem from mine. I've always thought of acne as being 2 different types: the EXterior and the INterior. The Ex acne, I believe, is triggered by simply dirty fingers touching the face, or not washing your face at night to find a bump in the morning. You know, an external cause.
The In acne, that's a real bastard. Some internal problem makes your skin react in a strange way, thus producing breakouts which seem to come from deep within you skin, slowly growing outwards until they reach the surface and BAM you've got a huge red bump on your face, which hurts quite a lot.

The strange thing about me it that people that have acne problems usually also get them on the back and shoulders, whereas my back and shoulders are perfectly clear, only my face and sometimes my neck get affected. Also it seems to me that the creams, gels, scrubs, masks, rejuvenations and such have NO effect what so ever on my acne.

Currently, I am trying a DRUG (yes indeed it is a drug, pills I take twice a day with a meal) and so far, its pretty damn pointless as well, even after a few months of torture and torture it is, because this particular pill dries up the skin terribly, and the eyes and lips get it too. Often I wake up to find my lip so dry, that it cracked open during the night and to see the blood stains on my pillow. Doctors say it's supposed to prevent more breakouts while speeding up the "death" of the existing ones. Funny how, even though I did take the pill regularly for the last 9 weeks, I just discovered a new bump on my cheekbone which feels pretty bad :(

Anyway, my point is, I believe that people with persistent acne need not find a miracle product, but try to find someway to fix the inner problem that makes your face react so strangely. I've tried a few diets, tried quitting smoking for a few months to see if it would help (that one was hard, but I was very desperate about my acne), I've even tried to bathe my face in holy water (at the repeated requests from my mother - it turned out to be pretty useless, just as I expected).
Seems to me that changing WHAT YOU EAT, as well as how often and how much has the greatest effect on my skin, perhaps I will look into that some more.

Hope your acne is not as fierce and persevering as mine.
Best of luck

Its true, proactive is a very effective way to treat acne, FOR SOME! - not everyone will have the same results when using chemical remedies. If you still have problems with your acne, you should instead try out a natural cure, such as green tea, its rich on benzoyl peroxide which has shown to be the best way for treating any form of acne, face acne, back acne, chest acne and cystic acne. I believe you can see some more tips on:

www.Ance-ai.com

- they have many tips on how to fight acne, and they have helped me a lot, currently trying out an acne scar cure, and so far it is working

Or try searching for acne + benzoyl peroxide + natural on google.com

Good luck..

Proactiv really works well for me also. I love the product. However, I also know that many people are actually having issues with it. If you're one of those people having problems with Proactiv, be sure to check out how to use the product correctly here:

http://www.getridofacneonline.com/2008/09/how-to-use-proactiv-correctly.html

Also note that Proactiv will make your acne worse at first. It's just part of the way that the product works. Still, Proactiv is the most effective acne product I have used to this dya.

Hi, I have been using Proactiv for almost 4 months now and I am amazed with the results. It really worked for me. I had tried Acne Free and Neutrogen before, none of those did anything for me. It took me 1 to 2 months to see result with Proactiv but now I am completely clear. As a Proactiv user, I can invite other people to try Proactiv for free, you just have to pay the shipping which is $5.95 If you would like me to have them email you this offer just write me with your email address (joanapmonteiro@hotmail.com)

Well does proactive work for oily sking only? I have a normal to dry skin tone and have ugly blackheads. Will it help me get rid of those? These days as the weather is hot my skin sweats a lot. My face now seems oily.

honestly proactive is the only thing that worked for me so far. i was really happy with the results in the 2 months that i've been used it. but after awhile i developed an allergy from benzoyl peroxide. my face got itchy and then i got red bumps all over my face(good thing it disappears after a day or two). i stopped using it for days but when i used it again i got the same results. so i discontinued use for three months, to my surprise my skin is still having that allergic reaction thats why i finally decided not to use it anymore..
